According to my local radio station, “it’s the most wonderful time of the year” – and, as we know, the festive season comes with a whole host of celebrations. It can be easy to lose sight of the substantial things amongst all the turkey, stollen and mulled wine.

That’s why it’s important we make time to celebrate our successes (as a team and as individuals). While a cash bonus may be the corporate equivalent of the chocolate orange – always welcome and short-term satisfying – there are more things than extra money. A sense of meaning, impact, validation/recognition and environment are just as important motivators for teams (source: Forbes).

Having said that, offering your employees value through free land or by paying off student loans might not be that realistic or relevant for your firm. To really stand out, perhaps we need to think more inside the box…

FT’s notion that “old perks die hard” is useful – it can be important to remember the seemingly ‘smaller’ things. For example, free food remains a winner and hosting informal ‘office awards’ can be a fun and light-hearted way to bring people together by celebrating them and boosting morale. So, why not tell your colleagues how great they are – and have a little fun?
