In a market driven by rapid advances in technology, AI-led innovation, industry consolidation and increasing client demands, global law firms face a paradox. They are more capable than ever yet struggle to differentiate themselves. As client expectations evolve, so too must the strategies that underpin business development (BD).

This article outlines five levers that can help BD and marketing leaders unlock strategic growth, helping firms move beyond transactional wins to enduring client partnerships.

1. Bundling for impact

Global law firms sit atop vast reservoirs of client data from matter histories, feedback loops and sector trends, yet much of it remains siloed, preventing the cross-functional insights that drive real and actionable value for the firm and its clients. The firms that win tomorrow’s mandates will be those that spot patterns in client demand and respond with bundled offerings that solve broader business problems.

Take ESG: clients navigating sustainability disclosures often need regulatory guidance, employment advice, and risk management. Rather than pitching these services separately, firms can craft integrated propositions that reflect the complexity of the client’s challenge. This isn’t just cross-selling, it’s cross-solving.

Delivery innovation follows naturally. Bundled offerings open the door to new pricing models, cross-jurisdiction collaboration, and the use of legal tech to streamline workflows. BD leaders must champion this approach, helping teams see beyond their silos and into the client’s strategic horizon.

2. Reframing the pitch

In high-stakes RFPs, global law firms often find themselves shoulder-to-shoulder with equally credentialed competitors. What distinguishes the winner isn’t pedigree, it’s relevance.

Too many pitches default to “what we’ve done”. The shift to “what we’ll help you achieve” is subtle but transformative. It requires BD teams to coach partners in outcome-led storytelling: anchoring proposals in the client’s goals, using their language, and painting a picture of future success. This strategic alignment is what clients will remember.

This was the approach I have taken at various global full-service law firms where I have driven global panel wins, significant revenue growth and the transformation of a leading multinational online retailer into one of the world’s largest law firm’s most valuable client.

3. Strategic foresight

In an era of geopolitical flux, regulatory change, and supply chain fragility, BD leaders anticipate, not just react.  Scenario planning is no longer just for strategy teams; it’s a core BD capability.

During COVID-19, I led a global scenario planning initiative at one of the world’s largest law firms, guiding the Board through strategic risk evaluation and opportunity mapping across global regions and industries. Through workshops with over 200 senior lawyers, clients, and market stakeholders, and extensive research, I reframed the firm’s global strategy, enhanced client support during market turbulence, and influenced how the firm pursued profitable growth and innovation.

Whether analysing post-election regulatory shifts or assessing the impact of AI, BD teams can help firms prepare pursuit strategies before client RFPs arrive. This means gathering signals from client conversations, market intelligence, and competitor moves and translating them into actionable foresight.

For global firms, the challenge is to blend macro trends with local and industry-specific nuances. BD leaders must establish routines, such as quarterly foresight sessions and cross-border intelligence sharing and use technology to track geopolitical trends and industry sentiment, embedding anticipation and a client-centric focus into the firm’s DNA.

4. Relationship mapping: From transactional touchpoints to strategic partnerships

Elite firms are often rich in client contact but poor in relationship depth. True strategic partnerships require multi-level mapping; connecting not just with the GC, but with the CEO, COO, CIO, Head of Risk, and business unit leads.

BD teams can lead this mapping effort, identifying gaps, nurturing dormant relationships, and facilitating cross-practice engagement, with AI-driven innovation presenting more and more compelling platforms to improve law firm processes for onboarding, retaining and expanding client relationships. Ultimately the strategic imperative is to move from matter management to strategic counsel, from being a supplier to being a sounding board.

5. Rethinking metrics: Measuring what matters in client development

Traditional BD metrics such as pitch win rates and revenue attribution tell only part of the story. To drive strategic growth, firms must measure what matters: relationship health, client sentiment, and market positioning.

This means tracking engagement indicators (event participation, feedback loops), opportunity velocity (response time to emerging needs), and strategic alignment (how well offerings match client priorities).

BD leaders must also advocate for partner behaviour metrics, collaboration, client development activity, and cross-practice referrals. These are the leading indicators of future growth.

Final thought

Global law firms have the talent, reach, and reputation to lead the next era of client development. But doing so requires a shift – from reactive to proactive, transactional to strategic, credentials to outcomes. These five levers offer a roadmap. The firms that apply them intentionally will not just win more work; they’ll win deeper trust.
