Last week we discussed the need to prioritise progress over perfection. This week we’ll explore how adopting that attitude can maintain the authenticity of your firm’s values.

Authenticity is one of the most frequently repeated words when talking about ESG, responsible business and other related topics. So, what constitutes authenticity? How do you achieve it? How do you maintain it?

Using storytelling to engage attention can be a great tool. Once you’ve established your firm’s ESG terminology, you should use repetition to embed values. External accreditation such as B Corp and ISO 14001 can demonstrate your fulfilment of those values, but so can vocal involvement of leadership. It is important that your ESG goals are apparent at all levels of your firm. If they’re authentic to your firm’s mission, everybody from a trainee to a CEO or managing partner will be able discuss them fluently.

Authenticity also means keeping employees and clients informed of your achievements – and failures. Regular and transparent reporting will reassure them that your values are intrinsic and not just for show.

Honesty about your journey and progression will appeal to employees by showing a realistic approach. Employees who feel that their time and abilities are respected will respect their firm and its values and will therefore be able to authentically convey those values to clients.

“With everything we put out we aim to be honest, including targets we may have missed.”
