The top five festive films you should watch this year

The festive season is a time when tradition blankets cities, shops, and our screens. The reason for some of our rituals may have been lost over time, who knows exactly why we put presents under a fir tree? But whether you follow every custom, (like waiting until 1st December to put up decorations) or embrace more modern rituals (have you been “Whammed” yet?), these all serve as a reminder to have fun and spend time with loved ones. And, of course, to watch cosy films together while enjoying the treats reserved for Christmas Day!
On that note, here’s our list of the top five festive films to watch this year (warning: may contain spoilers!).
…is a tapestry, offering a glimpse into moments of people’s lives. From a man who discovers his girlfriend is cheating on him with his brother and retreats to write a novel, only to be disrupted by a Portuguese woman, to a wife making a lobster costume for her son’s (very modern) nativity play while her husband risks their family’s well-being for a romance with his secretary. There’s also a charming prime minister besotted with his slightly sweary secretary, all serenaded by an ageing rock star trying to top the Christmas charts. It’s the epitome of British humour and a timely reminder of what the festive season is truly about: celebrating positive relationships – both personal and professional.
Frank Capra’s 1946 masterpiece didn’t initially resonate with its post-war audience who were craving cheer and light-heartedness. However, after becoming a Christmas staple on broadcast television, the story of George, a family man facing financial ruin and the threat of arrest, gained widespread affection. Like Scrooge, George is given the chance to see what life might have been like, with the help of Clarence, an angel hoping to earn his wings. Bursting with infectious energy, life-affirming hope, and relatable despair, this classic is a tribute to resilience in tough times and the power of community. It also offers a solid lesson in keeping your books in order when running a financial service.
This festive comedy follows a father who accidentally causes Santa to fall from his roof and, due to small print in a contract, is unexpectedly recruited to take his place. At its heart, it’s a wholesome American tale of a father striving to keep the Christmas spirit alive for his son. And for all the contract lawyers out there, it serves as a useful reminder to always read the terms and conditions…
Want to know the significance of ‘rosebud’? Watch this masterpiece, which revolutionised cinematography. It traces the life of a recently deceased, lonely old millionaire recluse in his eccentric estate, as a reporter tries to uncover the meaning behind the media magnate’s last words: “rosebud.” Through glimpses of key moments in his life, we see the events that led to his lonely demise. It’s an interesting take on what makes an entrepreneur, but ultimately, it serves as a reminder that, in the end, what truly matters is your network and the people around you.
The bucket hat and clementine nose that form the face of the iconic snowman make this a classic that never fails to warm the heart. The simple story of a boy’s snowman coming to life and taking him on an adventure to the North Pole captures all the cosy fantasy that we associate with the festive season from childhood. It’s also a lovely reminder that visualisation is an essential part of turning dreams into reality!
