10 certifications to showcase your firm’s positive impact (if you’re not quite ready for B Corp)
Written by Caitlin Roxburgh
Whether you call it ESG, CSR, or social impact, professional services firms are increasingly aware that clients want to engage advisors who share their values. One of the most recognisable badges of honour is B Corp certification, with an increasing number of firms joining the B Corp ranks (including Bates Wells, Shakespeare Martineau, and BKL).
However, we speak to lots of businesses who are taking other positive steps on their ESG journey, and want to evidence these achievements – even if they aren’t ready for rigorous and time-consuming processes like B Corp.
If your firm is in this position, we’ve put together a list of ESG certifications for you to consider:
1. 1% for the Planet
Are you looking for a donation programme with real impact? 1% for the Planet members donate 1% of their annual profits to support environmental organisations. At least half of the donation must be monetary, but there are also non-monetary giving options such as employee volunteer time.
2. Business in the Community
Business in the Community is a network for purpose-driven businesses, endorsed by royalty! They provide training, action frameworks, and opportunities to share best practice. This support can be tailored to your firm’s goals, whether you want to focus on community engagement or diversity and inclusion.
3. Campaign for Greener Arbitrations
The Campaign for Greener Arbitrations is specific to professional services. There are lots of ways to get involved – from signing their Green Pledge to committing to one or more Green Actions (tailored for law firms, arbitrators, institutions, and corporates).
4. Great Place to Work
Don’t forget about the ‘S’ in ESG – one way to demonstrate this is to offer an outstanding employee experience. Great Place to Work certification recognises employers who create a supportive culture, where everyone can thrive regardless of their background. It’s a great way to attract the best talent too, with certified companies averaging 40% more applications per job opening.
5. Green Mark
Green Mark certification allows you to achieve your sustainability goals through a user-friendly online portal. An initial assessment identifies clear action points based on where you currently are in your sustainability journey. You can then complete these actions at your own pace to become certified.
6. Inclusive Employers
Inclusive Employers is a network for businesses who want to build inclusive workplaces. All organisations are welcome to join, whether you’re a leader in the field or just starting on your inclusion journey. They offer training, consulting, and resources, as well as a programme of webinars and networking events.
7. Investors in Diversity
Created by the National Centre for Diversity, this certification is recognised as the leading equality standard for UK organisations. First, a cultural audit will identify bespoke action points for your firm. You’ll then receive ongoing support to implement these recommendations and achieve accreditation.
8. Mindful Employer
Recognising the importance of mental health in the workplace is a key part of improving your employee experience. Signing the Mindful Employer charter shows that you put the wellbeing of your team first and promote open, positive conversations about mental health at work.
9. Planet Mark
Based on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, Planet Mark covers both environmental impact and social value. With over 600 businesses now certified, it’s a widely recognised and reputable scheme that will enhance how clients perceive your brand.
10. Top Employers Institute
The Top Employers Institute is a global organisation dedicated to enriching the world of work. To achieve certification, your firm’s people strategies will be assessed in relation to six broad themes, which cover the full employee journey.
